Alan: ISHTA Lecture

Learn about the foundations of ISHTA Yoga as developed by Alan and his father, Mani Finger, in South Africa over 50 years ago. ISHTA Yoga blends the ancient and contemporary sciences of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda. It is an authentic lineage of modern yogis which caters to the individual through alignment based flow, breath work, and visualisation.

Sarah: ISHTA Well-rounded Practice

Experience a signature ISHTA class with Sarah, integrating alignment, flow, breath, visualization, and yoga philosophy. This class will cover all major muscle groups with an emphasis on the balance of strength and flexibility. Leave feeling centered, steady, and easeful on all levels.

Alan: Anahata Bhedhana Meditation

This practice expands simple breath awareness into an expansion of the heart chakra that creates peace, wellbeing and compassion. It is an elegant introduction to visualization using the breath. It both increases physical experience of the breath, and connects this experience to the natural state of expansion, compassion and joy that is the nature of yoga and our true selves. (Sat means purification and Yam refers to emotional expression).

Alan: Tantra Lecture Tattvas

Tantra comes from two words: Tanoti which means to expand and Trayati which means to liberate. In this lecture, Alan will explain the basic tenets of ISHTA Tantra, including a breakdown of the Tattvas, which are the seeds of the 5 major elements that make up the entire universe and all of its existence.

Sarah: Seven Segments

Learn about the seven segments of alignment as developed by Alan, which relates to the seven chakras. In this lecture we will explore the physical body from a Tantric perspective and understand how each segment has a physical, spiritual, and psychological quality. Find out how to bring each segment into balance, and how that creates balance on a subtle-energetic level as well.

Sarah: ISHTA Tantra Seven Segments Practice

Explore and apply the ISHTA seven segments of alignment through an asana practice, which relates to the seven chakras. In this practice we will explore the physical body from a Tantric perspective and understand how each segment has a physical, spiritual, and psychological quality. Find out how to bring each segment into balance, and how that creates balance on a subtle-energetic level as well.

Alan: ISHTA Diksha Meditation

This meditation practice is the cornerstone of ISHTA meditation: a logical progression of the basic tools of pranayama, pratyahara, Kriya and visualization that creates an accessible and seamless experience of the inner world. Cultivate a sense of centeredness while increasing focus and concentration, leading you to an inspired state of oneness.

Teacher Training ~ 1.00pm – 6.00pm:

Sarah + Tamara: Posture Lab

Learn how to view the physical postures of yoga through an ISHTA Tantric lens, applying the seven segments of alignment and the Ayurvedic approach of constitution and condition. We will look at individual bodies and see how there is no “right way” to do the pose, but the way that is suitable to the needs of the individual.

Sarah + Tamara: Hands-On Adjustments

From an energetic perspective, our hands are the transmitters of Shakti, the mother-nature force the governs us. They also relate to the heart and throat chakras, so how we touch relates to both how we feel and how we communicate. In this session, Sarah and Tamara will teach how to apply the principles of ISHTA yoga and the seven segments of alignment to hands-on adjustments, enhancing the art of touch. Both basic and deepening spots will be covered.

Sarah + Tamara: Sequencing

Understand the art of sequencing from an ISHTA perspective. In this session we will explore the 9 components of an ISHTA practice, how to sequence to a “peak pose,” and how to integrate philosophy into the classroom. There will be ample time to create sequences in groups.




Workshop ~ 11.00am – 1.00pm:

Alan + Sarah: Mudra and Mantra

A mudra is an energetic seal that effects our consciousness. Mantra is sound to expand the mind. In this workshop, Alan and Sarah will explore various mudra and mantra, the effect they have on our levels of consciousness, and how to use them in practice. Sarah will integrate them into an asana practice, while Alan will close with a powerful meditation, leading to a transcended state of bliss and unbound potential.

Workshop ~ 2.00pm – 4.00pm:

Alan + Sarah: Sankalpa

Sankalpa comes from two words: “San”, which means that which resonates with spirit, and “Kalpa”, which is an intention. The goal of the Sankalpa practice is to embed your intention into the deeper realms of your unconscious, enabling you to realize your life’s purpose and manifest it into your living with grace and ease.  In this workshop, Sarah will lead you through an asana practice integrating the kriya techniques used to open the passage to the unconscious, which governs us. Alan will lead you through a series of ancient Tantric techniques to form your sankalpa and plant it into the unconscious realm so that you can know your own truth and manifest it into your living. The afternoon will provide you with the tools to achieve your deepest desires in all aspects of your life.




One Day Retreat ~ 9.00am – 3.00pm:

Alan, Sarah + Tamara: One Day Retreat

Immerse in whole day of beautiful ISTHA yoga at our wonderful Bibra Lake studio which will leave you feeling more refreshed and nurtured than you can even imagine. Get away from the hustle and bustle and reconnect to nature, surrounded by beautiful native bushland, just a short drive from the city. Together Alan and Sarah will guide us through mediation and a flowing asana practice. After lunch, we float back into the studio for a delicious Yin and Restorative session with Tamara so you’ll finish the day feeling super delightful.




Masterclass ~ 9.15am – 11.15am:

Alan + Sarah: Sa Hum and Hum Sa:

“Sa” is the sound for inspiration, and “Hum” is the sound for transformation. In this class, Sarah will explore the ancient kriya technique of Sa Hum in the asana practice to tap in to the unified field of potential that is all around us and manifest it into our living. Alan will integrate the Hum Sa technique in the meditation practice, leading us out of the unconscious and into a state of super-conscious, which is unbound and unlimited. Learn how to use these techniques on a daily basis both in yoga and in living.

Teacher Training ~ 12.15pm – 2.45pm:

Alan: Understanding The 4 Major Nadis Through Embryonic Development

A nadi is a chord, or an energetic line that our awareness and prana flows through. In the ancient writings of the subtle body there are four major nadis that map our being: Ida, Pingala, Shashumna, and Brahma Nadi. In this lecture, Alan will explain how there major nadis can be seen in embryonic development, and how they migrate to become major functions of our nervous system.

Sarah: Learning How To Teach Kriyas in Asana

In this session, Sarah will discuss the two main kriyas that are taught in the ISHTA asana practice: Sa Hum and Arohan Awarohan. Together we will explore their purpose, when it is appropriate to teach them, and how to do it in an accessible, yet authentic way. Be prepared to practice teach!

Workshop ~ 5.00pm – 7.00pm:

Sarah: Sweat and Samadhi

Samadhi is the state of yoga, or pure consciousness. This state is our true nature and birthright. In this workshop, we will burn out the impurities trapped in the physical body through a heat-building asana practice integrating kriya techniques, followed by a series of yin/restorative postures, which will calm the nervous system and quiet the mind. The practice will close with a powerful meditation to merge our consciousness with the universal intelligence that is all around us connecting us to unbound potential.




Masterclass ~ 9.15am – 11.15am:

Alan and Sarah: Ayurveda and Asana

Ayur means life and veda means science. Learn about the ancient Indian science of Ayurveda, and how each human being has his or her own unique mixture of the biological forces of life: earth, water, fire, air, and space. This is known as one’s prakriti, or nature. Vrikriti is the condition of these forces as a result of one’s environment and living. When these two states are in conflict, we feel out of balance in ourselves and with the universe. In this workshop, Sarah and Alan will teach you how to create harmony between your prakriti, (or constitution) and your vakriti (or condition) through asana, pranayama and meditation, leaving you in a state of equanimity and love.

Teacher Training ~ 12.15pm – 2.45pm:

Alan: Framework to the Ayurveda:

Delve deeper into the science of Ayurveda by learning how to analyze your prakriti and diagnose your vakriti through pulse reading and questionnaire. We will also discuss the gunas and how they affect the doshas.

Sarah: Teaching to the Doshas

Learn how to read the individual student by studying their breath and their pulse. This session will help you to understand how to design a practice for the individual in a private setting.




Masterclass ~ 9.15am – 11.15am:

Sarah: Hip Opening to Unlock the Unconscious

The hips relate to the water chakra, which governs our ability to be creative, fluid, and sensual in life. The hips are also the seat of the unconscious, so releasing this region helps to free the flow of shakti, or the mother nature force that leads to manifestation. In this class we will focus on the major movements of the hips, and experience how unlocking the muscle tissue also leads to the unlocking of our purest potential.

Alan: Meditation Bastrika

Bastrika, also known as “bellows breath,” is a pranayama technique that is used to generate heat at the base of the spine, which is where our thought patterns, belief systems, and conditioning get locked. This heat, or agni that is generated during bastrika helps to release the clinging of these beliefs that govern us, so that we can experience liberation and connection of ourselves to all things.

Teacher Training ~ 12.15pm – 2.45pm:

Alan: Pranayama

Prana is the life force energy or electricity that animates and enlivens us. Ayama means to extend and yama means to direct. In this lecture, Alan will discuss how pranayama techniques can serve to extend and direct the life force energy within us, creating balance in the nervous system and steadiness in the mind.

Sarah: How to Teach Pranayama

Learn how to teach basic and advanced ISHTA pranayama techniques in both a group class setting and in privates. Understand how pranayama can serve to both energize and calm the nervous system and the mind.




Masterclass ~ 9.15am – 11.15am:

Sarah: Practice to connect to your Authentic Self

The Tantric practice sees all aspects of life as a form of consciousness. Inherent in each being is a divine spark that is perfection at its essence. As we grow and develop, we lose that sense of connection to our most authentic self and believe that we have to become someone or something better than who we are internally. In this workshop, Sarah will create a safe space for you to start to look at that narrative of “not good enough” and apply a new paradigm using Tantric tools and techniques. Learn to welcome the present moment as it is, experiencing images, sensations, thoughts, and emotions not as barriers to pure consciousness, but as pathways to enhancing it.

Alan: Calling Your Own Name Meditation

This ISHTA Tantric meditation is designed to help us to see the different personalities that we develop in life over time. We are not born with a personality; we are born with individuality, yet we develop various attributes that mask our own true nature. In this guided practice, Alan will take us through the “forest” of our mind to reveal the different phantom characters that we have become attached to and believe are real. Once we have witnessed those characters we are then able to merge them back to our source, feeling no longer fragmented and “pulling ourselves together”.

Teacher training ~ 12.15pm – 2.45pm:

Sarah: How to Teach Meditation

Learn to teach both basic and advanced ISHTA meditation techniques in group asana, meditation, private, or corporate settings. In this session we will look at how to make the more esoteric Tantric practices accessible and non-intimidating. We will cover topics such as voice, sequencing, and how to teach meditation from an authentic space.




Masterclass ~ 9.15am – 11.15am:

Sarah: Shoulder Opening to Unlock the Unconscious

From a subtle energetic perspective, the shoulders relate to the throat and the heart chakras, which also relate to the subconscious. The subconscious governs our feelings and how we relate to the external world. This practice will focus on releasing and opening the shoulder girdle through targeted postures and stretches, creating space and ease in the heart and throat for unconditional love and clear communication.

Alan: Merudanda Meditation

Merudanda mediation combines a set of three mudras, or yogic hand gestures, with meditative practice. These mudras can be used in meditation to center and calm the mind, as well as connect to the breath. Alan will guide us through this sequence to help us unlock our deepest awareness through the experience of directing the breath to different parts of the body.

Teacher training ~ 1.00pm – 6.00pm:

Alan: Mantra, Yantra, and Japa Lecture

Mantra means to extend and liberate the mind. Yantra is a shape that alters our consciousness, and japa means repetition. Learn about the ancient tools of sound, shape, and chanting, and how they can be used to expand the mind, alter our consciousness, and create transformation.

Sarah: Advanced Principles in Sequencing

Combining poses in a way that is both energetically engaging and anatomically safe and healing is sequencing a yoga class.  Learn about the 9 basic components to an ISHTA asana class, and how they can be used to create balance, strength, steadiness and ease. We will also cover advanced principles of advanced asana and how to make challenging postures relevant in a subtle-energetic perspective.




Workshop ~ 11.00am – 1.00pm:

Sarah and Alan: Balancing the Chakras Through Yoga

The chakras are the headquarters of each element in our body, and they have a profound effect on our physical, emotional, and energetic state. In this workshop, we will explore how the different chakras manifest and can come into balance through our yoga practice.  Alan will teach you how to use the tools of kriya and meditation, while Sarah Platt-Finger will lead you through an asana practice to find balance within yourself and with the universe, bringing clarity, wisdom, and unbound potential into each moment of your life.

Workshop ~ 2.00pm – 4.00pm:

Alan and Sarah: Yoga Nidra

In Sanskrit, nidra means sleep. In yoga nidra we bring ourselves into that state between sleeping and dreaming most often referred to as the hypnagogic state. This condition allows us to tune to brain rhythms that are not normally available in the waking state. In this workshop, Alan will share with you the science behind yoga nidra. Sarah will then guide you through a practical experience of these different brain rhythms in order to deal with the different levels of consciousness in life.
